ITBO - Sub-project: Lernnavi

The primary goal of the digital learning platform Lernnavi is to support the development of competencies in German and Mathematics among students of grammar schools and specialised secondary schools.

Project overview

The aim of this sub-project is to increase educational achievements in German and Mathematics by the digital learning platform Lernnavi. Lernnavi is a tool to practice basic and university relevant knowledge and competencies, tailored to students in grammar schools and specialised secondary schools. Based on analyses of learning strategies and learning success, in this sub-project functionalities will be developed in a targeted manner to improve the features available in Lernnavi and to increase students' motivation to actively use Lernnavi on a regular basis.

The sub-project was approved for implementation by the ITBO project and programme committee on 27.01.2021.

Digital Learning Platform Lernnavi

The aim of the sub-project is to increase learning achievements with the digital learning platform Lernnavi by developing measures and implementing them in the system which further  improve the offers available in Lernnavi in a targeted manner based on analyses of learning strategies and learning success and to increase students' motivation to actively use Lernnavi on a regular basis.  Lernnavi a tool supposed to be used by the students outside regular lessons, although but the tool can also be used in class and in control of teachers.

The sub-project is divided into two development strands, which should lead to an improvement in learning success and motivation in the work with Lernnavi.

Project component 1: Identification, analysis and prediction of learning strategies and learning success when using Lernnavi

In recent years, the use of educational technologies, including computer-based learning support systems, has increased considerably in schools. In order to achieve the highest possible learning success, it is important that such learning support systems adapt to the learning requirements of the student. For example, the tasks should be neither too easy nor too difficult, the feedback for the student should be helpful and informative, and the user guidance should be understandable and intuitive. The project component consolidates and develops intelligent technologies to fullfill these needs.

Project component 2: Learner motivation and directions for future developments

The acquisition of academic competences essentially depends on how much time a student invests in learning with a high degree of attention and commitment. For the work with Lernnavi, this means that  students invest enough time in an active and focussed way to deal with the learning content. An important prerequisite for this is a high level of motivation to work with Lernnavi. Accordingly, it is important to obtain indicators of how the students' motivation can be assessed predicted and positively influenced by the tool.

Project roadmap at a glance

Project objective: The objective is to  increase the learning progress achieved with the help of Lernnavi by developing measures and implementing them in the system that further improve the offers available in Lernnavi in a targeted manner based on analyses of learning strategies and learning success and increase the motivation of the students to use Lernnavi regularly and actively.

January 2021 The sub-project order was released by the Project and Programme Committee.
Q4 2021 First findings on modelling learning strategies and measuring instruments for motivation are available
Q2 2022 Modelling of learning strategies and measurement tools for motivation are available
Q2 2023 Description of relevant behaviours for learning success and motivation is available
Q2 2024

Findings and products

One concern from the individual projects in the focus area of primary and secondary schools is low-barrier and timely access to findings and products for teachers and school administrators.

Information and findings are made available on the transfer and networking platform "zITBOx", which was created especially for the ITBO projects. In stories, project staff and schools report on their experiences from the ongoing work on the projects, among other things.
