Learning about mathematics (WILMA)
What characterises didactic expertise in kindergarten-level mathematics teaching? This was the research focus of the binational research project WILMA.
WILMA provided teachers and other education specialists in Germany and Switzerland with training on the mathematical needs of school pupils. The project also examined the effects of such training measures on the quality of teaching and learning at kindergarten level, and the degree to which they benefit children’s numeracy skills specifically. All the teachers were provided with rule-based games into which the mathematics support approaches have been integrated, and were required to use these in their kindergartens.
